UNLV Lady Rebel Player of the Week Katie Powell will face Reno tonight
UNLV Lady Rebels are still tied in first place with Wyoming in the Mountain West Women’s Basketball Conference after defeating the New Mexico Lobos 74-62 last weekend. Although they were behind 11 points in the first period of the game, the Lady Rebels outscored the Lobos 30-10 on points off turnovers. Junior center Katie Powell was named Lady Rebel of the Week for the third time during the conference scoring 20 points with eight rebounds and three steals.
Paris Strawther explains how she feels about the win and how the Lady Rebels face challenges against opponents and referees, “Just maintaining our aggressiveness, keeping our poise and continuing to keep playing our basketball, I feel like we kind of went away from that a little bit towards the end of the first half but I think we picked it back up when we came back out. I feel good, I feel like we are in a good place, we just have to keep continuing to get better. We still have a ways to go. We know that things are not always going to go our way, to us we can only control what we can control so everything else can’t phase us like the refs not calling fouls or travels. We can’t let that affect how we’re playing.”
UNLV head coach Kathy Olivier says, “We did go on a little lull at the end but overall we played really smart basketball. They came out guns blazing, making every shot, but we hunkered down on defense, chipped away, closed within one after the first. That was a great effort, and we never looked back after we took the lead in the second.”
The Lady Rebels will play their final road game tonight in Reno in the second governor’s series battle sponsored by Barrick Gold and NV Energy.
