MAYWEATHER AND MCGREGOR SET TO DUKE IT OUT
One of boxing’s greatest fighters and UFC’s biggest stars are set for a showdown in Las Vegas. The fight will take place on the 26th of August.
Floyd Mayweather, 40, has been retired from the sport of boxing for nearly 2 years. His last fight was against Andre Berto in September of 2015 which was after Mayweather’s disappointing fight against Manny Pacquiao.
For the past year he has been mulling a return. Floyd has stated that he is a business man and would only come back if he was offered the right amount of money.
Conor McGregor, 28, is coming off a brutal fight and victory against UFC star Nate Diaz last August. After that fight McGregor has put all of his focus on boxing.
McGregor and Mayweather have been throwing verbal jabs at each other on social media. Rumors of a fight between the superstars started to flare up when McGregor got his boxing license in December 2016.
UFC’s President Dana White was always optimistic that the fight would take place and it appears that his gut feelings were correct.
White told ESPN, “We’ve been in negotiations for a while. Negotiations went smooth. Floyd is surrounded by some smart people, and we got this thing done. The impossible deal is now done.”
A lot of people are not happy about this fight; they anticipate it to be a cakewalk for Mayweather. Boxing Legend Oscar De La Hoya has been real critical of the fight and wanted fans to do something to prevent this fight from happening.
In May, he wrote an open letter to the fans. “If Floyd were to come out of retirement to take on someone like Keith “One–time” Thurman, Errol Spence or some other top welterweight, not only would I applaud the fight, I’d be the first one on line for a ticket. That kind of fight is what the fans – and I am a fan first — deserve. Which brings me back to the circus. Floyd’s and Conor’s motivation is clear. It’s money. In fact, they don’t even pretend it’s not.”
The fighters are to meet at 154 pounds at the weigh-in, wear 10-ounce gloves for the match and both are to be drug tested by the USADA.
The fight will take place at the T-Mobile Arena and ticket already on sale for a hefty amount. Mayweather is expected to be a heavy favorite.
