The Lakers took home the championship trophy last year by defeating the Trail Blazers 110-98.  The Trail Blazers have a great chance of making it to the championship, they tied with the Lakers 5-0 in the summer league this year.  Fans are hoping to see an exciting rematch between the two this year. Last year’s Summer League MVP was Lonzo Ball.  Although there was speculation that this year’s MVP may very well be Hart, but nothing is etched in stone until the championship game is over.

The Los Angeles Lakers played an amazing game in the quarterfinal game against the Detroit Pistons over the weekend at the Thomas & Mack Event Center.  With LeBron James cheering from court-side, the Lakers star of the night was forward Svi Mykhailiuk from Ukraine who contributed 19 of the Lakers 101 points against the Pistons.

Being his first summer league, Svi is having a great experience and making very impressive plays during the tournaments.  He says he is not worried about what role he will play with the Lakers next season, he says he just want to think about the summer league.  So far Svi is shooting at 15.0 Points Per Game, he also is averaging 2.4 assists per game and 4.2 rebounds per game.

Another player that has been getting a lot of attention during the summer league is Lakers Guard Josh Hart from Villanova.  The 6-5 guard followed Svi in points over the weekend getting 18 of the Lakers 101 points. Hart is averaging 21.6 points per game and averaging 2.6 assists per game and 4.4 rebound per game.

According to Lakers reporter Mike Trudell, Hart is the Lakers leader on defense during the summer league as well as the best young Laker to lead his team on offense. In an interview with Trudell, Hart says his personal focus during the summer league is to win.  He said, “At the end of the day, I want to be known for winning.”

When asked his thoughts on possibly being this year’s MVP he said, “I’d rather have a championship than an MVP.”  Praising how important it is to work as a team he goes on to say, “Accolades are nice but without your team, your nothing by yourself.”

Going into this week’s finals, the Lakers will play the play the Cleveland Cavaliers who is 5-1 in the summer league in a semi final game Monday at the Thomas & Mack.  If they win they will face off against the winner of the Memphis Grizzlies who is 4-2 and Portland Trail Blazers tonight.
